The COP26 climate summit in Glasgow succeeded in getting 197 countries to agree new rules on limiting greenhouse gas emissions, but last-minute objections from India and China stymied a commitment to end coal use and fossil fuel subsidies.

Conference president Alok Sharma fought back tears in the final minutes as he apologised to other ministers for watering down a clause on fossil fuels to appease India and China.

However, the summit marked the first time that coal or fossil fuels had been directly referenced in a COP agreement.

Australia’s defence minister has said it was “inconceivable” that his nation would not support the US in a campaign to defend Taiwan from China, amid rising concerns about Beijing’s increasingly assertive military activity.

Jonathan Slone will resign as Asia chair at Jefferies, the US investment bank, after less than three years in the role to pursue opportunities in private equity.

Slone is among the most high-profile finance veterans in Hong Kong, having previously worked in leadership roles at CLSA, a brokerage in the territory, for three decades.
